Adhering to a set of rigorous, predetermined protocols, the Division of Acute Care Surgery treats seriously ill or seriously injured patients, addressing most injuries of the neck, chest, abdomen, and extremities. These efforts include coordinating care with other surgical specialists such as neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, plastic surgeons, and interventional radiologists. Since the point of entry for many patients is the emergency room, our work requires effective interfacing with the critical care team and emergency room staff. We routinely care for U.S. citizens abroad who have been victims of trauma.
Although not a designated New York State Trauma Center, NYP/Columbia cares for approximately 1800 adult trauma patients per year. In conjunction with the Division of Pediatric Surgery, the Division of Acute Care Surgery cares for pediatric trauma patients arriving at the Pediatric Trauma Center at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian.
